Progess.
Hi to all,
This was tractor engine out day, and transported to my workshop bench for a strip down so that the valves piston bore and crankshaft can be checked and renovated as required.
Plus the timing can check and set correctly, a long overdue oil change and filter clean out both for oil and fuel.
The fuel tank can now be removed and repaired or replaced, the rest of the tractor will be brought in for me next week so that the tracks drive gears and brake bands can be checked and adjusted or repaired.
So things are now moving along a bit more smartly!

Rearrange my work space.
Hi to all,
Making room for my tractor engine in my small workshop so that it can be worked on and removing the inlet manifold so that an adaptor plate can be made to convert to SU carburettor, I will see what I can find at the Biggar rally at the weekend.

Painting and soaking.
Hi to all,
Cylinder head bolts on that old tractor are well seized and in danger of snapping so a lot of WD40 and left to soak into the rust, in the mean time a lot of buffing and wire brushing of very old rusty steel before a quick coating of paint, as close to the colour as I can find.
Might need a few coats before it looks right the marsh-land water and mud of the last five years has taken its toll, and I need to make up an exhaust system for it so plenty to keep me amused.
Things will move on quicker once the rest of the tractor gets delivered, I hope by then to have the engine ready to refit if all is well inside the cylinder.

Today was carburettor day.
Hi to all,
The second-hand carb that I bought at Biggar rally was striped and cleaned and checked over to day Piston and needle was set lined up and the jet was cleaned as was the float chamber and needle valve, so now all freed off and working as it should.
Cut out an adapter plate and drilled it out to take both flanges of manifold and carburettor still got a bit to do but should be ready to set it all up tomorrow.
One the rest of the tractor arrives in a weeks time will refit the engine and see if it can be started and ran.

Carburettor conversion.
Hi to all,
The carb. conversion and adaptor plate are now completed and fitted, all that I need to do now is figure out how I am going to get the exhaust manifold to fit into the space beside the carb. so that the exhaust pipe clears the bottom of the carb, just two and a quarter inches to space so a very tight right angle piece needed.

Exhaust elbo.
Hi to all,
Not having got anything like the shape required for the pipe from the exhaust port from any of the suppliers I tried I decided to make a right angled piece which would fit into the 2 1/4 inch space between the cylinder and the carburettor and I now have an exhaust old tractor style, straight up in the air with just a quarter of an inch to spare so a heat shield will have to be fitted between the exhaust and the carb, won't know how well that will work until the engine is refitted and running.
The rest of the tractor should be dropped off next week and then I will see if this works or not, interesting times!

New front drive ornament.
Hi to all,
The whole tractor arrived at my house this morning at nine o'clock before most people were up and around and the most common question by lunchtime was what the hell is that, city folk's!!
So lot's of work to be getting on with but amazing how much is free and turning considering how long it has been sunk into that marshland on the side of the loch over the past five years.
Good thick half inch steel which has only surface rust which will wire brush off and buff up to take a fresh coat of paint.
The engine which I removed and brought into my workshop ten days ago is nearly ready to be dropped back into the chassis, once drivable I will be able to get it around behind the house and close to my workshop doors.

Engine up grades.
Hi to all,
After up grading the carburettor from Amal to SU inch and quarter by a made up adapter plate I then had to redesign the exhaust system doing away with the full length system all the way along the length of one side of the tractor and instead welding up a right angled piece which allowed me to fit a vertical tractor chimney, that way the driver does get all the fumes where he sits.
Had to cut away and redesign the engine cylinder cover to make space for the carb. and the exhaust, once the engine and engine bay are cleaned and painted in the next few days I should be able to refit the engine which will allow me to drive the tractor away from the view of all the passing public.
Still some track rollers to free off on each of the front driving wheels which will make a big difference to the free running of the tracks.

Trollied engine.
Hi to all,
The engine has left the workshop strapped onto a trolly for the journey round to the front parking area, just waiting on the paint in the engine bay to dry off and then we will see if the old beast will start and run as it should.
The SU carburettor will need to be adjusted from its basic settings once the engine is started but I hope get it to run at a low tick-over so that the gears can engage cleanly.
Then it can be driven around to the back out of sight and sound of passing comments!

Engine back in.

Just finished putting the engine back into the tractor chassis all two CWT of it so things are moving along beginning to look like a tractor again, still a lot of work to be gone but I am getting there.

Exhausted and damaged.
Hi to all,
Not me but the tractor the exhaust got damaged while fitting the engine so it will have to be removed and repaired, carburettor has a leak due to a missing gasket on the float chamber, apart from that it should now start and run at a better tick-over with the SU carb.
Weather has turned back to thunder down pours of rain so it might be a tomorrow job, just as well I covered up the carb. and magneto last night and capped of the exhaust pipe.
The next job once it is running is to bring it around to the back of the house, that should stop people asking what it is!!

Hi Mike,
We cannot be good at everything Mike and I am not good at photo's but I will get my daughter to post a few for me, it will be while before the tractor is fit for vintage shows but it is getting better to look at very day.
I will try to get it started up and running tomorrow even if it is just long enough to get the carb. settings right.

Got a bit more done,
Hi to all,
A bit more rust removed and some grease nipples clean and cleared, made up a temp. throttle cable and fitted that the choke cable is in place and working.
The weak point is again that magneto not putting out a good spark so back the coil conversion to gain a very good spark using a wire core high tension lead
so with a bit of luck I will get it fired up tomorrow.

The Ransome tractor project.
Hi to all,
After much adjusting of timing and carburettor to get the choke and throttle to work and return to closed position with a small injection of petrol she burst into life, the carb may need some fine tuning but she ran and for quite some time so that has now made it movable.
The old burst fuel tank has now been removed and found to be beyond repair so for now it is running off of plastic fuel container until I work out where to site the replacement tank.

Another day of checks and tests.
Hi to all,
Having checked and tested and hopefully ironed out most if not all of the glitches this evening tomorrow I can try a drive after a long time at tick-
over if that is a success I can drive it around to the workshop doors which will make it easier to work on and get away from the daft question brigade.

Small but important jobs.
Hi to all,
Today I managed to make a waterproof cover for the coil and mount a plastic fuel tank and find a site for the battery, next was to remove the track centre covers for painting and to gain access to more grease nipples.
Managed to free off some more of the track rollers and get a bit more painting done and drill out four broken bolts, a new support bracket for the exhaust made up, all takes a lot of time but we are moving things along.

Hi to all,
With a ramp already made and strength tested to bring the tractor down two nine inch steps before it can be driven round to the workshop doors the next thing is to find a quiet time of day to get that short journey taken.
Living on a busy main road is bad enough but maybe once schools are in and most people are off to work, less chance of running someone over!

Hi to all,
Sprung a leak at the carburettor it would appear that adaptor plate has distorted as it has been tightened up to the manifold so I have made up a rubber flange next to the carb. and I hope to get away with an O-ring between the adaptor plate and the manifold.
Failing that I might have to make up another shaped rubber joint and with this extra distance new bolts had to be found to mount the carb. but with the rubber I should not have to tighten up as much as cause further distortion, I hope!

Interest.
Hi to all,
Just after I finished off work on the tractor last night a man came to the door to ask if it was for sale, it seems they are a lot more scarce than I thought because he had been looking for one for some time.
Today I put the carburettor and exhaust back on along with the new rubber flange which I hope will take the shape of the adapter plate which I had got as level as I could I hope the rubber will compensate for any distortion.
And with an O-ring on the manifold side of the adapter plate this should cure my leak problem.
